How AI answers work

The AI reads what search finds

Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode don't have a separate index. They pull from the same pages and the same ranking systems as regular search, then write an answer. If Google can't crawl and rank your page, its AI can't cite it. Confirmed–Google

That's why we don't sell AI SEO as magic. On Google, it's SEO done well, plus checking what the AI actually says.

What local AI answers cite

Your website and your Google profile come first

BrightLocal ran about 200,000 local searches through ChatGPT and Google's AI over 60 days and counted where the answers got their facts. Confirmed–Industry

42%

Business websites

The single biggest source. A clear page for each service you sell is what the AI can quote.

29%

Google Business Profiles

Your categories, services, description and reviews. Then Yelp, at about 10%.

2 to 4

Businesses named per answer

AI Overviews name 2.5 on average, ChatGPT about 4. A short list: if you're not on it, the searcher may never see you.

The same question asked twice often gets different businesses: only 20 to 33% overlap between runs. One screenshot of "ChatGPT recommended us" proves very little, so we ask every question three times and report how often you're named. Confirmed–Industry

What we do

The work, in order

1. Ask the AI tools about you

The questions your customers would ask, in English and French, in ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Three runs per question, and the report says which tool and which version produced each answer.

2. Let the right crawlers in

Your robots.txt and hosting checked so the search bots behind AI answers (Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) can read your site. Blocking AI training is your call, and it's a separate setting. How the bots differ.

3. Pages the AI can quote

One page per service, the area you serve written out in plain text, and real price ranges where you can give them. "How much does it cost in Ottawa?" is a question AI tools answer from whoever publishes it.

4. The profiles AI reads

Your Google Business Profile first, then Yelp, Apple Business and Bing Places, all with the same name, phone and description. Yelp now licenses its data to OpenAI, so it matters more for ChatGPT than it used to.

5. Reviews that say what you did

Asking every customer what you helped with and how it turned out. Those words are what an AI matches when someone asks for "a plumber who explains the price up front."

6. A monthly report you can check

How often you were named, out of how many runs, which pages were cited, and what changed. Alongside your Search Console numbers, so AI isn't measured in isolation.

Tested by us

We started with our own site

CapitalSEO.ca showed up in Google's AI features 9 times in its first week back online, all from Canada, before it had a single review. Small numbers, but they came from ordinary SEO work, not from any AI-only trick. Tested by us

What we won't do

  • Promise you'll be "the top pick in ChatGPT." Nobody controls that.
  • Plant fake mentions, Reddit posts or reviews. Since May 2026, Google's spam policies name attempts to manipulate AI answers as spam.
  • Sell llms.txt files or "AI schema" as a ranking fix.
  • Tell you we're "training the AI." Publishing gives the search step something to find; it doesn't train the model.

Common questions

Before you call

Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?

Less than people selling it say. On Google, AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same index and the same ranking systems as regular search, and Google says no special markup or llms.txt file is needed. What's different is the checking: you have to ask the AI tools what they say about you, and the other engines (ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity) pull from more than Google.

Can you get ChatGPT to recommend my business?

Nobody can promise that, and the answers change every time you ask. What we can do is make sure the engines can read your site, find a clear page for each service, and find the same facts about you on the profiles and listings they cite. Then we measure how often you're named, over several runs.

Should I add an llms.txt file or AI schema?

Not for Google: it lists both among the things that don't help. We spend the time on pages and listings instead.
